motherhood is tough - you are not alone

Motherhood is a unique experience. It can be the most incredible thing you will ever do, but it doesn't always feel that way. Whilst it can be rewarding, it can also be scary, stressful, exhausting, unfulfilling and at times, downright boring. When we become mothers, we change forever - we become something that we have never been before. We undergo permanent and lasting physical, biochemical and neurological changes, our identity changes, people's perceptions of us change, our preferences, our social status and our sense of purpose are all different. We need to learn who we are again, whilst learning a whole new role and set of skills whilst at the same time, teaching a little human that is completely dependent on us new skills and processes. This change is akin to the level of change we go through during adolescence but with the added burden of having others to look after and responsibilities bigger than ourselves. No matter how you look at it, it is a lot.

When we look at it this way, it is no wonder that sometimes we find it hard. With every age comes new and different challenges that we need to navigate and new skills that need to be learned. Knowing that you are not alone in these challenges is really important, understanding why they come up and effective strategies to address them is critical to making motherhood a little less tough.

common challenges facing mothers

you can feel different

When I say, it can be different, it does not come from a place of judgement. I do not think you are doing anything wrong - chances are you are doing thousands of things that are right. I say this because when you are feeling these things, when you feel trapped by your thoughts and feelings, it can be hard to imagine anything else, it can be difficult to remember a time when you felt calm, safe, content, driven, happy or even energised. But you can feel different and you will again - it might be easier and faster than you think. 100 percent of my clients state that they feel significantly better after just one session and most conclude therapy, having achieved their goals in less than 6 sessions.

Whether it be a one on one session, a group or even self paced tools, I will always explain what is happening and why. The biochemical, neurological and psychological processes that are influencing the feeling or behaviour you are having. I believe knowledge is power and when we understand what is happening, it makes it easier to achieve change. I will always listen and be empathetic with you, everything you share is confidential, it is a safe space to share and explore free from judgement. I also use positive psychological methods to focus on building on the strengths that you already possess and build on things that are already working for you - we do not throw the baby out with the bathwater. I work with you to help you set goals and make the change, learning and improving every week.

Having a counsellor that gets it can also be really helpful. We often struggle to describe what it is like to be a mother, sometimes we share things with people only to have our worries minimised or our feelings of guilt dismissed. Sometimes when we say we are lost or struggling, people will tell us all the things we should be grateful for. Nothing can prepare you for becoming a mum and there is nothing more tiring than constantly needing to justify or explain. At Mumshine, you never have to do that, it is a safe space where it OK to be you.
